A Q&A with James Gallacher, MD

James Gallacher, Managing Director at Omni-Pac Group UK, shares his thoughts on sustainability in packaging.

With the global sustainable packaging market expected to grow in value to $491.75 billion by 2029, at a CAGR of 7.44% from 2023-2029, there is no denying its potential. This dynamic growth is being fuelled by a few main factors, but there is one that is stealing focus; the growing global emphasis on environmental conservation and corporate social responsibility.

As Managing Director of Omni-Pac Group UK, a moulded fibre packaging company based in Scunthorpe that produces 0.5 billion pieces of moulded fibre each year, repurposing 7,000 tonnes of recycled paper and cardboard in the process, responsible sustainability is something James is incredibly passionate about.

In this interview, James shares his perspective on sustainability and emerging trends in the industry.

Q: What does sustainability mean for businesses like yours?

For Omni-Pac Group, sustainability involves a commitment to environmental preservation through the recycling and repurposing of paper waste. The company recycles over 100,000 tons of used paper and cardboard annually, utilising minimal water in closed-circuit systems. This approach not only reduces waste but also aligns with our mission to protect the planet and its oceans.

Q: Speaking of sustainable alternatives – what trends are you seeing?

Omni-Pac Group has seen first-hand a growing demand for eco-friendly packaging solutions across various sectors, including food and medical industries. There is an increasing preference for packaging made from natural, renewable materials like moulded fibre, which is recyclable, commercially compostable, and serves as an excellent alternative to plastic. This trend reflects a broader consumer awareness and responsibility towards environmental sustainability. An awareness that will only continue to grow.

Q: How do you work with your customers to produce sustainable packaging solutions?

We collaborate closely with clients to develop packaging that meets specific needs while prioritising environmental impact. We also offer personalised packaging options including high quality after press solutions in various shapes and colours, allowing brands to enhance their product appeal while still aligning with eco-friendly values. By providing tailored solutions, Omni-Pac Group helps all of our customers achieve their sustainability goals.

Q: What are some ways companies are reducing the use of single-use plastics?

From the work we are doing across the sector specifically, we have seen companies increasingly looking to adopt moulded fibre packaging as a sustainable alternative to single-use plastics. Moulded fibre is derived from recycled paper and cardboard, offering benefits such as recyclability, commercial composability, and reduced environmental impact. Its versatility makes it suitable for various applications, including food containers and medical products, thereby decreasing reliance on plastic materials in some industries that have become notoriously reliant on them.

Q: How do you work with other businesses to manage your own sustainability?

Omni-Pac Group partners with like-minded organisations to enhance their sustainability efforts. Through such collaborations, we received tons of redirected material which we can then push back into the manufacturing process, significantly reducing environmental impact. These partnerships exemplify how businesses can work together to promote a circular economy and achieve shared sustainability objectives.

Q: What other trends do you see on the horizon for packaging?

Emerging trends in packaging include a heightened focus on eco-responsibility, with industries seeking packaging solutions that minimise environmental footprints; it’s a trend that isn’t going anywhere. There has also been increased movement towards higher valued branded packaging that not only protects a brand’s products but also communicates a commitment to sustainability to its customers. Advancements in materials and technologies are leading to innovative packaging designs that cater to both functional and environmental considerations, businesses need not choose one over the other any more. The shift towards regulatory compliance and extended producer responsibility (EPR) policies is also influencing packaging choices.

Q: What does sustainability mean for businesses like yours?

Sustainability for Omni-Pac Group means reducing environmental impact by using recycled materials, minimising waste, and supporting a circular economy. By repurposing over 100,000 tons of used paper and cardboard annually and using closed-loop water systems, as a company we can ensure that what and how we produce are both eco-friendly and resource-efficient.
